Roseau the capital of Dominica is located on the west coast of the island in the parish of St. George. It is the main city in the island and Roseau is filled with history and culture. It was the established by French settlers in the early 16th century and was named after the tall reeds, roseaux, growing along the bank of the Roseau River. When the British gained ownership of the island plans were put in place to develop Roseau as the main commercial area on the island. To date Roseau remains the capital city with Portsmouth as the second town. Roseau is accessible by air from many islands in the Caribbean. The Canefield airport is approximately 5 miles north of Roseau a mere 10 minute drive. There is regular taxi service from the Canefield Airport to Roseau or any other part of the island. The cost of taxi from Canefield to Roseau is just about US$20 per taxi. The Melville Hall Airport is the Dominica’s larger airport and it is the port with capacity for the larger aircrafts flying into the island. The Melville Hall Airport is located on the north east coast of the island about two minutes outside the community of Marigot. There are flights to and from other Caribbean islands of Martinique, Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbados, St Maarten, Puerto Rico, and St Lucia among others. Most flights continue to or have connecting flights to other countries in the Caribbean such as St Vincent, Trinidad, Anguilla, and St Kitts among others. Travelers coming in from the United States, Canada, and Europe can land at any major airport in the Caribbean and use a connecting to Dominica. Airlines such as LIAT, Carib Aviation, and Take Air all have daily flights to Dominica from many Caribbean countries. Melville Hall Airport is about one hour’s drive to the capital Roseau and there is a regular taxi service available at the airport. A taxi from Melville Hall to Roseau costs about US$56 per taxi a price which is reduced if the taxi is shared with other persons.
Roseau is also accessible by ferry and cruise ships. The town was developed on the waterfront and the Ferry terminal and the Cruise ship berth are located on the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard in Roseau. There is a regular ferry service to the islands of Martinique, Guadeloupe, Marie Galante and St Lucia. The ferry service goes daily to and from the French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique and three days a week to St Lucia. The ferry docks in Roseau and taxi service to other parts of the island is readily available. Cruise ships also call to port with much frequency during the peak seasons October to May. Visitors arriving by yachts or personal sea vessels can use moorings available on the coast along the coast and are in close proximity of Roseau. Some mooring are located just outside the capital, and visitors can get ashore via the ferry terminal or the Fort Young Hotel dock.
